Master of Arts – Communication – Concentration in Communication and Health (dissertation or project)

Program Summary

The Department of Communication of the Faculty of Arts offers an MA program in communication with thesis or dissertation.
Students registered for the master’s degree with thesis also have the option of participating in a double degree program offered jointly with the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL) which leads to obtaining a Master’s degree in multilingual communication. 
The Department of Communication also offers a course-based master’s program in communication (MC) to which the co-op option can be added and a doctoral program in communication.
The department is one of the units participating in the multidisciplinary program in science, society and public policy.
The master’s program has two fields of research: media studies and organizational communication. The “media studies” field is dedicated to the analysis of the contents and modes of operation of traditional media and new media in their sociocultural, economic, political and regulatory dimensions. 
The field “organizational communication” is dedicated to the study of internal and external communication of public and private organizations, the dynamics of interpersonal and group relationships in the workplace, crisis/risk communication, public relations, use of ICT by organizations, etc.
The program aims to develop the following skills in graduates:
  • critically evaluate the theories, concepts, and foundations that underlie media studies and organizational communication, particularly as they relate to the student’s research interests.
  • demonstrate the ability to identify and deepen the various epistemological traditions developed by French-speaking and English-speaking specialists working in communication.
  • contribute to the development of technical skills, theoretical approaches, concepts and tools adapted to university and professional contexts.
  • analyze the data and communicate the results to various audiences, including researchers, decision-makers and communications professionals.
The Master of Arts degree is offered full-time and part-time. The double degree program with the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL) can only be completed full-time. 
In accordance with University of Ottawa regulations, students have the right to write their work, their thesis and answer exam questions in French or English.
NOTE:   The University of Ottawa offers a partial tuition fee waiver scholarship to French-speaking international students. This significant contribution to financing their study project allows for a considerable reduction in tuition fees.
To benefit from the partial exemption scholarship, international students must:
  • accept an offer of admission to a program of study offered only in French;
OR
  • have completed secondary or post-secondary studies in French for at least two years and have obtained their diploma; And
  • register for compulsory courses in French if these courses are given in both official languages ​​(French and English).
