The Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI) offers a Master of Arts (MA) program in Bilingualism Studies. This graduate program aims to offer advanced training in several fields of applied linguistics, including bi- and multilingualism, methodological and technological innovations in teaching second languages to adults, assessment of skills in second languages among adults, as well as language policies and planning.
This program is offered in French and English. The student must take one of the two compulsory courses of the program in French and the other in English. Elective courses can be taken in either language.
In accordance with University of Ottawa regulations, work, examinations, dissertations and theses can be written in French or English. The program is offered full-time and part-time. The master’s degree offers three options, the master’s degree with thesis, the master’s degree with dissertation and the master’s degree with coursework.
The institute also offers a double degree of Master of Arts (MA) in Bilingualism Studies and Master 2 in Language Sciences – French as a Foreign Language in partnership with the University of Lyon 2.
The double degree option leads to obtaining a double degree with the University of Lyon 2. It combines training in Language Sciences – French as a Foreign Language with the Master of Arts (MA) program in Bilingualism Studies . Students enrolled in this component spend the winter term in Lyon 2, France, where they follow the compulsory courses of the Master 2 program in Language Sciences, and in the spring term do a teaching and/or internship. 65-hour unpaid research at the language center of the University of Lyon 2.
The double diploma option is offered full-time and the training to obtain the Master 2 from Lyon 2 is offered in French.
NOTE: The University of Ottawa offers a partial tuition fee waiver scholarship to French-speaking international students. This significant contribution to financing their study project allows for a considerable reduction in tuition fees.
To benefit from the partial exemption scholarship, international students must:
- accept an offer of admission to a program of study offered only in French;
OR
- have completed secondary or post-secondary studies in French for at least two years and have obtained their diploma; And
- register for compulsory courses in French if these courses are given in both official languages (French and English).
