Exercise is crucial to maintaining health and reducing the risk of developing diseases like type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. With COVID-19 forcing more people to work from home, there’s an even greater need for professional exercise guidance and training. Jobs such as fitness instructors, exercise physiologists and health promotion officers are predicted to see strong future growth.
Applicants can turn their passion for physical health into a rewarding career with La Trobe’s Bachelor of Exercise Science. Students will learn the scientific foundations of human movement and fitness, then use their knowledge to help individuals reach peak health and performance. They will work with real athletes and teams – from recreational to elite – through La Trobe’s extensive network of sports partners. You’ll graduate ready for a dynamic career in sport, exercise or rehabilitation.
Students will explore the field of human biosciences and understand the foundations of how we function. From there, they’ll build their knowledge in exercise physiology and psychology, as well as human anatomy, movement and learning.
Students will hone their ability to help athletes achieve sporting success by carefully fine tuning their individual training. They will also discover how to improve community health and behaviors by working with groups such as the elderly, adolescents and athletes undergoing rehabilitation.
Students will learn from lab sessions and case studies, as well as lectures, seminars and workshops. Furthermore, they’ll gain hands-on experience and build professional relationships through industry placements. Students’ could have the opportunity to work with the Bendigo Spirit Women’s basketball team, the Bendigo Pioneers under-18 AFL team, high school elite athlete sports programs or the Bendigo Academy of Sport. They will also gain experience delivering exercise to apparently healthy clients in local gyms and hospitals.
The Bachelor of Exercise Science offers students the strongest pathway to postgraduate degrees such as La Trobe’s Master of Exercise Physiology and Master of Physiotherapy Practice.
