The Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Biosciences helps students build on successes by completing Honours to enhance essential employability skills or take the first step to a career in research, academia and beyond.
Mentored by expert staff from La Trobe’s School of Life Sciences, students will develop a variety of scientific techniques by conducting their own research project. To complement their research, essential laboratory, scientific communication and presentation skills established during the undergraduate degree will be consolidated through workshops and exercises. Students will also be exposed to leading edge methodologies as part of a competitive research team.
Honours also gives graduates the opportunity to specialize in the following disciplines:
- agriculture
- biochemistry
- botany
- ecology, environment and evolution
- genetics
- microbiology
By completing Honours, students will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge in their field and, through professional behaviors, the values that shape the work of a professional scientist. They will also have advanced skills in designing and successfully implementing scientific investigations, analyzing and interpreting data and presenting your findings to scientific audiences.
More than simply consolidating the knowledge gained from the undergraduate degree, this program develops graduates’ abilities in research and enhances other essential employability skills, giving them a career-ready edge in today’s competitive job market.
Honours is also the best foundation for a postgraduate coursework degree, a higher degree by research or a career in academia. After completing the program with distinction, students could qualify for entry into the Masters by Research or PhD.
